California Guard Card Classes Online: What You Can — and Can't — Complete From Home

Yes, most of your California guard card training happens online — 35 of the 40 required hours, on your own schedule, from any device. But since January 1, 2026, state law requires exactly one piece to happen in a classroom: the 5-hour Appropriate Use of Force session. Understanding that split will save you from wasting money on a non-compliant course.

What you can complete 100% online

• Powers to Arrest (3 hours, $28). The first part of your 8-hour pre-assignment requirement — citizen's-arrest authority, liability, search and seizure, trespass, use-of-force law, and reporting. Start immediately after checkout.
• The 16-hour mandatory block (due in your first 30 days) — public relations, observation & documentation, communication, and liability/legal aspects.

The 5 hours that must happen in person — and why

SB 652 amended Business & Professions Code §7583.6, effective January 1, 2026. It requires the 5-hour Appropriate Use of Force portion of the initial 8 hours to be delivered in a facilitated classroom setting, by the same BSIS-licensed provider that delivered your online hours.

The reasoning is hard to argue with: use-of-force judgment involves scenarios, de-escalation practice, and physical fundamentals that can't be evaluated through a quiz. In our Santa Rosa classroom, that means role-plays, the use-of-force continuum applied to realistic situations, handcuffing fundamentals, and a scored practical evaluation with an instructor who has a real law-enforcement background.

How the hybrid flow actually works

1. Enroll online ($28) and finish the 3-hour Powers to Arrest course at your pace — most students take a day or two.
2. Pick a class date on the 8-hour course page or the booking page. Your $150 seat fee is collected when the office confirms your date.
3. Attend your 5-hour session at 50 Old Courthouse Square, Suite 200 in downtown Santa Rosa — bring a government-issued photo ID and a pad and pen.
4. Get your certificate with a verifiable serial, then continue to your 32 online hours while BSIS processes your application.
